I will celebrate Earth Day this Saturday by clearing out my (overstuffed) wardrobe!

This Saturday is Earth Day, and it might just be the most important one yet! As the new Trump administration has recently, rather controversially, denied the effects of climate change on our beloved planet, I think protecting the environment and doing our bit to tackle the issue on Earth Day this year is possibly more important than ever before.

3 things you should know about Earth Day:
When did it begin?
Earth Day was founded way back in 1970 by then U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, to raise environmental awareness after a devastating oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The first celebration brought 20 million Americans to the streets and still is the largest secular observance in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year.
What is it?
Since then, it has been held every year on the 22nd April, as a way to educate people all around the world about the importance of environmental protection and to raise awareness about the importance of going green. The aim is to encourage people to do things that will benefit the Earth, such as recycling more, using solar power or plant trees.
How can I get involved too?
This year’s theme is environmental and climate literacy. There are plenty of Earth Day events taking place across the globe. Check their website for more information.
You can also get involved without attending an official event by trying some of the following activities:
Walk to work, cycle or take public transport,
Quit plastic bags! Take a tote bag to the shops,
Use a reusable coffee cup and water bottle,
Make sure you recycle,
Go paperless,
Plant a tree,
Go meat or dairy free at least once a week – the meat industry generates nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions worldwide,
Buy local produce… or grow your own!
Clean out your wardrobe and donate to a charity – extending the average life of clothes by just 3 months of active use per item would lead to a 5-10% reduction in each of the carbon, water and waste footprints.
At the very heart of Spirit Animal’s ethos is the belief that we all have an obligation to protect the Earth and share its resources with future generations. I will be clearing out my (overstuffed) closet this weekend and donating to charity, this will make me feel like I am doing my part for the environment and also make room in my life (and in my wardrobe!) for the new. What will you do? Let me know in the comments!
